Attractive Convict available for interviews!!

You never know how your past can come back to haunt you.

When Meagan Simmons was arrested for reckless driving in July 2010, she suffered crushing humiliation and was slapped with a year of probation.

But even Simmons never expect that she'd be dubbed the "Attractive Convict" three years later in a popular Internet meme that features more than 280 versions of her mug shot with snarky comments like "I'd like her cell number," "Guilty ... Of Taking My Breath Away," and "Wanted ... In 50 States."

I knew [the picture] was out there, but didn't know it was big until a journalist called me on Friday," the 27-year-old told the Huffington Post.

Simmons lives in Zephyrhills, a town of 10,000 residents in central Florida, and she never imagined she'd become an instant celebrity.

"I'm not famous," she said. "Everyone knows me here."

Nevertheless, the former Hooters waitress is making the most of her newfound fame, posting one of her favorite iterations of the meme on her Facebook page.

The access to public records such as mug shots has inspired her to be extra careful, especially where her four children are concerned.

"I haven't told them about this, but I've just been cautious about taking them to the bus stop," she said.

The meme's popularity has gone global, which means that Simmons is getting admirers from as far as Norway and Australia, something she is still trying to deal with.

She is also getting asked the key to taking a good mug shot, something she is still not sure how to answer.

"I wasn't thinking about doing a good mug shot," she told HuffPost. "I was crying my eyes out and was distraught about the arrest."

She also doesn't think the picture does her justice.

Cheryl is a Hit with New Show!!

Live Jazz: Cheryl Bentyne at Vitello’s

By Don Heckman

Studio City, CA.  The stage setting for Cheryl Bentyne’s performance at Vitello’s Friday night seemed surprisingly spare.  An acoustic bass and a music stand on the left, a pair of guitars and a music stand on the right, and a stool and a vocal mic in the middle.

That was it.  “Up Close & Personal” was the title Cheryl gave her performance.  And it was right on target: Kevin Axt on bass, Wayne Johnson on guitar, and Cheryl in the center. No drums, no piano, no horns.  None of which were needed in two sets of exquisite songs performed with intimate lyrical and musical clarity.  One couldn’t have asked for more.

A multiple Grammy-winning member of the Manhattan Transfer, Cheryl has long been drawn to a far-ranging collection of material, with the Transfer, as well as her superb solo performances.  And on this magical evening, her choices combined to illuminate a gallery of what might best be described as contemporary art song.

Several familiar standards – “Love For Sale,” “I’m A Fool To Want You” and “It Might As Well Be Spring” — book-ended the evening with Cheryl’s convincing interpretations.

Her versatility surfaced with more pop oriented songs from Nelly MacKay, k.d. lang, Lennon & McCartney, Leonard Cohen, Melody Gardot and Patricia Barber.  And Cheryl displayed her jazz perspectives with Horace Silver’s “Senor Blues,” Matt Dennis’ “Angel Eyes” and Landesman/Wolf’s “Spring Can Really Hang You Up The Most.”

As if that wasn’t a fully adequate expression of her versatility, Cheryl also included several lush film melodies by Ennio Morriconne, enhanced by her own lyrics.

Kevin Axt, Cheryl Bentyne and Wayne Johnson

Each tune was supported – often in brilliantly spontaneous fashion – by the stirring contributions of Axt and Johnson.  And, in addition to their keenly balanced backing, they offered captivating solo passages.

Ultimately, of course, even the most appealing program of songs – no matter how eclectic – calls for convincing vocal interpretations.  And Cheryl’s readings, with their rich musicality, reached into the inner heart of everything she sang.

She is, seemingly by nature as well as skill, a dramatic performing artist.  Whether she was swinging her way through “Senor Blues,” capturing the deep intimacies of the Cohen and Barber songs, as well as her Morriconne collaborations, or telling her sometimes jocular between-songs remarks, she was utterly captivating.

By the time Cheryl concluded the long embraces of her two sets of songs, the only thing missing was perhaps another word to add to the program’s title.  It might more accurately have said “Up Close, Musical & Personal.”

Hallelujah!

Live Jazz: Charmaine Clamor at Catalina Bar & Grill

By Don Heckman

It’s been a few years since I first reviewed jazz singer Charmaine Clamor.  I was powerfully impressed by what I heard on her debut CD, Searching For the Soul..  And I was even more impressed by what I heard in her performance at Catalina Bar & Grill on Sunday night.

The presentation was titled “Hallelujah! A Celebration of Rebirth and Renewal,” an appropriate label for an Easter Sunday event, further underscored by Charmaine’s parallel work as a physical therapist.  The mesmerizing quality of her Catalina performance, however, suggested that her evolutionary growth as a singer is probably not going to allow much time for anything other than the expansion of her career as a musical artist.

Everything was right about this program, starting with Charmaine’s singing. Over the course of the few years in which I’ve heard her perform, there’s been a continuing interpretive growth.  Early on, she was closely identified with a blend of jazz and Filipino traditional music, earning the title the Queen of Jazzipino music.

As intriguing as that material may have been, Charmaine brought much more to the stage this time around.  Her eclectic program of songs began with a distinct gospel touch via Ethel Waters’ hit, “His Eye Is On the Sparrow” and Duke Ellington’s “Come Sunday,” following up with Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.”  She sang each in authoritative fashion, without resorting into an overflow of too-familiar melismatic phrasing.

Charmaine was equally convincing with the old standard, “’Til There Was You,” the Italian classic “Estate,” “I Believe In Love” (based on Joshua Redman’s “Wish” with lyrics by Eli Brueggemann), a jaunty romp through “Pick Yourself Up” and a dramatically climactic “Here’s To Life.”  Add to that some of her original items and one couldn’t have asked for a broader, more engaging set of songs.

She delivered them with stunning effectiveness, balancing the lush timbres of her voice with the dramatic gestures and gripping expressiveness of a born musical story-teller.  And it didn’t hurt that Charmaine is a gorgeous woman, enhancing her slender appeal in a shimmering gold gown.

She was ably aided by the steady, solid support of her musicians: pianist Andy Langham, bassist Dominic Thiroux and drummer Abe Lagrimas.  Responding with near empathic back-up, subtly flowing in sync with her confident musicality and her rich, emotional qualities, the trio provided an encompassing musical embrace for an artist whose career is clearly heading skyward.

Expect much more from Charmaine Clamor (and let’s hope the Grammy voters are paying attention).

Casting New Lives Launches New Website Development and Hosting Service

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Temecula CaliforniaCasting New Lives will launch a new Website Development and Hosting Service on a March 4, 2013

Casting New Lives web hosting and web building will provide quality web building and hosting services at prices designed to attract consumers who have previously rejected such services as being out of their price point.

Another exciting detail is that once a person’s site is built, that person will be able to maintain the site entirely on their own without having the ongoing maintenance costs typically associated with most websites. “This could save consumers potentially hundreds of dollars a year”, says Brinka Rauh owner and developer. “I personally got tired of paying a webmaster every time I wanted to make a minor change on my site. This has been so much more cost effective for us as a company, and it will be for anyone who uses the service. Typically it will cost less than $1,000.00 to have a fully functional site, and as little as $4.00 a month to host the site after that! We can also host already developed sites for this same low cost”

Please Donate to this Great Cause

A LETTER FROM TIM HAUSER, ALUMUS OF ST ROSE HIGH SCHOOL and
FOUNDING MEMBER OF THE MANHATTAN TRANSFR.

Dear friends of The Manhattan Transfer,
On behalf of my partners Alan, Cheryl, and Janis, I would like to extend my sincere thanks and appreciation for your willingness to support our efforts to restore the Music and Arts Departments of St. Rose High School in Belmar, New Jersey. The devastation of Hurricane Sandy cost the school approximately five million dollars in damage, primarily due to the need to remove all of the mold in two of the first floor school buildings, and in the basement of the old building. The damage caused to the music and art departments was estimated at $250,000, i.e., total destruction. Some things absolutely cannot be replaced, such as valuable art portfolios of the students and teachers.
At the time we reached out to you from the stage, we said we’d let you all know when we would make our plans to help St. Rose. We are all pleased to let you know that on Thursday, March 28, 2013, The Manhattan Transfer, along with The New York Voices, and Jon Hendricks will present “An Evening of Vocalese” at The Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank, New Jersey. This is the first time this concert has been presented in the NY/NJ area. All of the proceeds from this concert will go toward the restoration of St. Rose’s Music and Art Departments.
We don’t often get the chance to perform with these great artists. Jon is now 91 years old, and has the energy of young man-- he’s absolutely amazing. The New York Voices are one of the greatest vocal groups around, and we will all be doing our own songs, as well as doing some musical pieces together.
If you cannot attend the concert, we would ask you to please make a donation. As I probably mentioned from the stage, I was a student at St. Rose, and when I saw what the storm did to the school, I was heartbroken. I know in my heart that if each one us contributes something, we can repair this damage.
If you wish to purchase tickets to “An Evening Of Vocalese”, you may do so at this web address;
http://www.countbasietheatre.org/calendar/show/show.asp?id=43248165
The date again is Thursday, March 28, 2013. There are a limited number of tickets which include a “Meet and Greet” with the artists.
If you wish to make a contribution, you may do so
online at http://tinyurl.com/strosefundraiser

I wish to thank all of you for your willingness to help our
effort as it’s greatly appreciated.
Like I’ve been saying, “If everybody can do something
for the Jersey Shore, it could be fixed!”
With best regards,
Tim Hauser
